Water Damage Insurance Documentation

Photos, notes, dates, receipts, and moisture documentation can help keep a water damage claim organized.

Capture the timeline

Write down when you discovered the damage, what you believe caused it, and what you did to stop additional water.

Photograph before and after

Take photos before cleanup, during extraction or removal, and after equipment is set. Include affected rooms and damaged materials.

Keep paperwork together

Save estimates, invoices, equipment logs, plumber notes, hotel receipts, and emergency supply receipts.

Do not assume coverage

A provider can help document damage, but coverage depends on the insurer and policy. Ask your insurer what they need before discarding materials.

When to call for local help

If water is still spreading, porous materials are wet, odors are developing, or you need documentation for insurance, it is worth talking the situation through with a restoration provider. Ask what they can inspect, how they document moisture, what work is included, and how pricing is handled before work begins.
